Trace Elements in Sediments of Rivers Affected by Brown Coal Mining: A Potential Environmental Hazard

چکیده

Brown coal remains an important energy source in Europe, including countries such as Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Greece. Open-pit mines disturb environment terms of air quality, hydrology, chemical biological transformations rivers receiving mine waters. In present study, we assessed impact waters from four brown open-pit on contamination river sediments. Chemical analysis included quantification 62 elements, heavy metals (HMs) rare earth elements (REEs). The sediments by HMs was evaluated using factor (CF), pollution load index (PLI), Nemerow multi-factor (PI). potential toxic effects aquatic organisms were ecological risk (PERI). Detailed chondrite-standardized concentrations REEs performed to describe water their pattern Cluster (CA) principal component (PCA) employed divide study sites into groups evaluate combined effect sediment texture site location showed that after discharge, there is a decrease HM REE each element’s concentration located 100 m downstream discharge caused washing out finest fractions

Environmental qualitative assessment of rivers sediments

In this study, the concentrations of heavy metals (Ca, Zn, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni) in thesediment of Shavoor River in Khuzestan Province in Iran has been investigated. After the library studies and field studies, six samples of water and sediment were taken from the river in order to evaluate heavy metal pollution in sediments. To determine the geochemical phases of metals in sediment samples the 5-ste...

Potential health and environmental effects of trace elements and radionuclides from increased coal utilization.

This report addresses the effects of coal-derived trace and radioactive elements. A summary of our current understanding of health and environmental effects of trace and radioactive elements released during coal mining, cleaning, combustion, and ash disposal is presented. Physical and biological transport phenomena which are important in determining organism exposure are also discussed. Biologi...

Distribution of trace elements in coal and coal fly ash and their recovery with mineral processing practices: A review

Today coal is among the most important energy sources. In order to meet the world's energy demands, low-calorie lignite with a high ash content is generally used in the large capacity coal-fired thermal power plants. As a result of coal firing, wastes such as fly ash, slag, and flue gas are also produced. Subsequently, toxic trace elements within coal are transferred to wastes such as slag, fl...

The Environmental Geochemistry of Trace Elements and Naturally Radionuclides in a Coal Gangue Brick-Making Plant

An investigation focused on the transformation and distribution behaviors of trace elements and natural radionuclides around a coal gangue brick plant was conducted. Simultaneous sampling of coal gangue, brick, fly ash and flue gas were implemented. Soil, soybean and earthworm samples around the brick plant were also collected for comprehensive ecological assessment. During the firing process, ...

Mass Release of Trace Elements from Coal Combustion By-Products

More than 100 million short tons of coal combustion by-products (CCB) are generated annually. More stringent environmental regulations and increasing costs will discourage placement in landfills, encouraging increased utilization and the development of new uses for CCB. However, the potential release of trace elements from CCB is a continuing environmental concern. A study at the Federal Energy...
